Our Story

Welcome to Ciccia Osteria, an exciting new concept in authentic Italian cuisine located in the vibrant neighborhood of Barrio Logan.

Ciccia is a term of endearment, similar to “sweetie”, that parents in Italy often call their children, and this love-child of renowned Chefs Francesca Penoncelli and Mario Casineri was born from the culinary artists’ experiences cooking in kitchens all around the world. In Italy, an Osteria is a restaurant serving simple food and wine, with the menu of traditional recipes based around daily availability of ingredients. Customers traditionally order and pay at the counter, and then sit at the table of their choice—there are no reserved tables. The osteria is usually run by l’oste or host, who sees to the satisfaction of the guests.

At Ciccia Osteria, we have embraced this concept to bring our customers delicious, affordable cuisine in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. From our hand-crafted pasta to our perfect-ending desserts, our dishes have at their heart the time-honored recipes we learned in our mothers’ and grandmothers’ kitchens in our native Italy, interpreted with a modern touch. Our wines are carefully curated to enhance the enjoyment of every dish. We invite you to experience for yourself the simple pleasure of authentic Italian cuisine at Ciccia Osteria.

A Life dedicated to the art of modern Italian cuisine

Chef Mario Cassineri who was born and raised in Milan, Italy, infuses a taste of cultural flare and tradition into each flavorful dish that he designs. Driven by a desire to both delight his guests as well as put a modern spin on contemporary dishes, Chef Mario credits his success in the kitchen to two defining attributes: palate and passion.

Mario and the rest of the Ciccia family are welcoming you to Dine in from Thursday until Monday every week. Our large patio is perfect for Al Fresco dining under the beautiful San Diego skies.

Nestled in Logan Heights, where you would not expect to find an Italian restaurant, you will find this gem of culinary perfection.Mario and Chef Francesca have created a formidable place to not only dine but to have an experience. The food is outstanding! Traditional Italian knowne plates but more importantly, unknown plates. Their Savory Flan is out of this world! Truly local gem.

Authentic Italian gem in Barrio Logan. The owners are the chefs and the daily specials are mind blowing. Warm, welcoming atmosphere. Outdoor seating. Handmade pasta. Glorious wine selections. Wonderful for date nightor with small groups. Have been enjoying Wednesday night pizza oven – gluten free crust.

Getting a pasta al dente out of Italy, is Mission Impossible… getting an authentic Italian dinning atmosphere… a 007 job for sure… this little place is a Gem… the pasta was brilliant, the service fabulous… I am a fan already… prices… way too fair…!!!

My family and I frequent this restaurant. The owners are so nice, and always treat us like family. Just experienced pizza night (every Wednesday) for the first time. We were not disappointed. They have a wood fired pizza oven outside so you can see them make your pizza which is pretty cool, and smells amazing. They are also always very accommodating of our small children, from seating us in a logical place, to bringing out the kids food before we even got our app orders in (if you have small kids you’ll understand what I mean). Support this local business and enjoy some good Italian food.

I’m reluctant to tell how great this place is, otherwise it will be overrun with new fans. The husband and wife owners are super friendly hosts and chef. Pizza Wednesday offers a selection not to be found anywhere else, on dough that takes 72 hours to make. We’ve been here more than a dozen times and are always amazed at the amazing food. Ciao!

Beautiful low key laid back place with amazing food at a decent price. Anyone know if it’s Italian or Italian / Greek fusion? Somehow I got the fusion vibe in terms of the food.

What a beautiful experience! I absolutely loved everything about Ciccia Osteria. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. The owners/workers are very attentive and kind. They have authentic Italian cuisine. A selection of wine and alcoholic beverages. Very reasonable prices. They have a vegan menu (for all my fellow vegans out there) as well as a GF menu. Did I mention they have delicious vegan desserts!? I highly highly recommend! Perfect for friend lunch dates, for family dinners, or a nice fancy dinner date with your significant other. You will leave with a happy tummy and a smile on your face I guarantee it!Thank you Ciccia Osteria for the wonderful experience!

Went here for the first time last night. We ordered the Fettuccine Bolognese and the Orzotto. Both were delicious! The onion bread they hand out was a nice surprise as well. I recommend sitting outside if the weather is nice. A great addition to this area!

This place is by far the best Italian food in San Diego. Barrio Logan is starting to build itself up and this is not your typical spaghetti and meatball type of place. Mario and his wife do an incredible job of entertaining, interacting, and making each guest feel important. If you have not eaten here yet, you are missing out. Great plates, cant go wrong with anything on the menu and the prices are more than fair. Also, they have a wonderful list of wines and Mario can help you pick out the perfect wine to go with your dinner and his wife, the head chef, will often come out and check on the guests and ask how the food is. GREAT PLACE and a MUST GO!

If you are a resident or visiting San Diego, this is a must-visit. It feels like a piece or Italy transported to San Diego. The food is delicious, the atmosphere quaint and the space so inviting. The love for the food and true Italian cuisine comes through in every dish. Try their mushroom flan and any pasta dish and tiramisu! Add it to the Date Night list, family dinner or birthday treat. Absolutely delicious! Came here twice during our 5 day stay in San Diego. Everything was fresh and just tasted amazing. Service was also great – need to order at the counter but then can order dessert at the table.

My girlfriends and I all LOVE owners Francesca, Mario and the magical place they’ve created Ciccia Osteria!!!! Such a lovely business w warmth, liveliness and of course amazing food. You do order at the counter to start, but you can order more food and drink from the table once seated. A tiny change but you’ll hardly remember once you start eating their incredible dishes. Wow! My family ate here for dinner tonight and we all loved it!! The staff are incredible, so friendly. And the food is amazing. We were especially crazy about the spreadable cheese that comes with the bread, I’ve never tasted anything like it. The food will blow you away and the prices are extremely reasonable. Highly recommend!

Casual counter ordering, indoor and outdoor seating in garden patio setting. Three menus (Regular, gluten free and vegan). Excellent pastas and friendly staff. Modest and delectable wines. Affordable prices encourage you to return again and again.
